Is the girl from panels 1 and 2 of #2031 the same girl in panel 3 of #2073? And if so, will she serve a purpose later on or is she just there as a background character?

Sssshhhhhhh

In panel three of comic 2073 (Marten and Padma’s date) was that the concrete wall across the street from Herrell’s in NoHo? Or am I just grasping at straws?

Yep!

How do you get the shadows? Is it just a matter of toning down the opacity to like 5% or something with the black paintbrush in Photoshop? I’ve been trying to recreate that to give my comics more depth, but I’m not sure if I like how it turns out.

I just pick a darker (and sometimes less saturated) shade of the base color in the color picker. I have a pallette set up full of various swatches of colors that I use frequently (hair colors, skin tones, that one shade of blue I use on Hanners’ shirts all the time) so it stays consistent.

Was it a conscious decision to bring back the inner monologues? I remember that being a one-off thing (Faye visiting her mum) till you brought it back recently.

Conscious in the sense that it was necessary to tell the kind of jokes and story I was going for, yes.

I’m curious- why have you shown Padma and Marten in bed so much more than Marten and Dora? Is it just because that’s been a majority of their interaction recently?

It’s just where the scripts have been going.

on the D&D print, im guessing marigold is a barbarian, faye is a rogue, and marten is a bard. but hanners is a what? sorceress? how close am i?

Cleric. It’s a pretty balanced party- they could use a dedicated tank, but between the barbarian and the cleric they should be okay. Except for the fact that Pintsize is DMing.

I was rereading some older QCs recently, and I stumbled upon the comic when Hanners makes her very first appearance (515)… and she is smoking. Did she quit or did you just stop drawing it/forget to?

She quit.

How come no one in QC has curly hair ?

Tai’s hair is meant to be somewhat curly, but I haven’t really nailed it down yet so it just ends up looking more unruly than anything else.

I don’t know if you’ve ever been asked this before, but the question about a QC TV show made me curious. If it were to turn into a show, which actors and actresses would you cast as the main characters? Or do you think it would work better as an animated series?

I have no idea

sven didn’t get eaten by an allosaurus, did he?

Nope, he’ll be back at some point.

This may sound weird and… oddly specific. A friend of mine and I were discussing what would happen if Padma does ever move back to L.A., and we wondered would you ever consider starting a spin-off comic where Elliot follows her but letting someone else write and draw it (Because I’m pretty sure doing two comics would be deathy murder death)? Like with CSI and superheroes, going through bunches of incarnations?

I doubt it.

You’ve talked about a lot of the fiction you enjoy, but what are some non-fiction books you recomend?

Anything by Antony Beevor or Stephen Sears or Shelby Foote or Brian M. Greene.

I was wondering what is your favorite noncanon ship from QC?

Pintsize/the earth’s molten core

Dear Jeph, what do you do all day (other than be awesome, which I assume is your natural state of being)? :p

Sleep and worry

I notice some webcartoonists seem to hang on to their original projects for a long time, even after they’ve begun other projects (Scott Ferguson comes to mind). A lot of times, this comes at the cost of the new projects, even if the new one is better than the original. I know QC is nowhere near its end story-wise, but if you were to start another project, would you have trouble letting QC go?

My goal is to be able to work on another project side by side with QC so I don’t HAVE to let it go. And I have ideas in that vein- just gotta find time to do them. But I imagine that if or when I get to the point where it’s time to wrap QC up, it will be tough.
