Hey! I’m a comic artist as well, and was wondering how long it took you working on QC consistently before it became a viable source of income? And do you file taxes on it? How does that even work?
I was really lucky and was able to live off of the comic after a year. But that is a pretty huge aberration- most folks have to plug away a lot longer than that before they start makin’ money! I had about 30,000 daily readers at that point, so that seems as good a benchmark as any.
Filing taxes is relatively simple, you just set up a sole proprietorship and file everything that way. As long as you keep track of your expenses etc. it’s not super-complicated. But then, Cristi does all the taxes so it probably SEEMS easier to me than it actually is.
Why does Spaceship have a SpaceShipOne-derived design when it’s an orbital spacecraft? The feathering reentry system wouldn’t work from orbital speeds. (I assume you just chose the design because it looks cool - and it does - but I was wondering if there was anything else to it.)
The Magic of Comics
I’ve been meaning to ask you since strip #1460. You post your comics in png format which is awesome. But you save in 8bit color which when doing effects like in strip 1460 or 2110, creates issues. When you originally posted strip 1460 it had no dither and the effect on momo in the last panel looked out of place. You later re-posted the strip with dither which looked better but created noise. Why not save in 24 bit png? QC could look the identical but effects would blend in seamlessly.
Because 24 bit pngs are HUGE and I already use like 10tb a month in bandwidth. Sometimes you gotta sacrifice display quality in favor of reasonable file size.
Ok, ‘desert island scenario.’ You can only take one guitar — an acoustic or electric (w/ amp, of course). Which is it?
My custom-made Tom Anderson and my MESA/Boogie half stack. I hope the desert island has electricity.
Have you ever thought of making a DnD strip/series of strip for QC?
yes
Do you draw little doodles for people at cons? Like them, a friend, or perhaps a bonercat?
Generally, yes.
Are you planning on coming to any English/UK conventions this year?
Probably not this year, the NZ trip exhausted our crazy travel budget, but maybe? And if not this year then almost definitely in 2013.
Does the game you were watching other people play on line happen to be Twilight Princess?
Nope. Lately I’ve been watching a whole bunch of Blood Bowl LPs.
would you consider the plush winslow and pintsize to be life size?
Nah, they’re smaller than the actual robots would be.
I finally put that comic up online! But now I am wondering about merchandise. While I don’t have any immediate plans to sell t-shirts and the like, I realize I have no idea how to get said custom t-shirts made. What should I look for?
Don’t even worry about it until you’ve got 5-10,000 daily readers.
Good sir, is that a tobacco pipe I see you smoking in your hourly comic? My friends and I have also taken up the habit, though we only smoke every once in a while.
Yep. I smoke too much. I keep wanting to quit but WELP
