Hey, I recently got into Minimal and was wondering if you had any good suggestions. So far all I have to go off of is pandora and last fm, so anything would really be helpful. Thank you.

I don’t really know how much of the electronic music I listen to could be described as “minimal,” but my last.fm page (http://www.last.fm/user/jephjacques) has a list of what I’ve been listening to lately.

What is your preferred construction for guitars, set neck, bolt-on, or neck through? Why?

I like them all, to be honest. If a guitar is well built there isn’t one that’s objectively better than any of the others. Right now my main guitars are all either bolt-ons or neck-throughs, but that’s mainly because you don’t see very many set-neck extended range instruments these days and I hardly play regular 6-strings anymore.

Jeph, I just saw your tweet about having been sober for six months. Congrats! I’m interpreting that to mean no alcohol at all. If that is the case, I have a question for you. Due to med changes myself, I have not had alcohol (save a sip of hard cider when baking with it) for about 4.5 months. How do you handle socializing without drinking? Most of my friends enjoy good beers and we often meet for drinks. It feels awkward not joining in. Or, they have beer-tasting parties. Any advice?

It used to be a lot harder for me, but over time I’ve gotten used to it. I’ll either bring non-alcoholic drinks of my own to parties or ask if the host wouldn’t mind me making some coffee, and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. If we’re out at a restaurant, same thing applies.

Are most of your readers ladyfolk, or dudebros?

According to one of my analytics programs it’s slightly more dudebros than ladyfolk, but I have a hunch that in reality it’s the other way around.

I know this sounds weird, but I find myself missing your extended commentaries that used to appear at the bottom of the comics. It was simply interesting and nice to hear exactly what was going through the mind of the artist when drawing/posting. And now it’s like an old friend I haven’t gotten to talk to in a long time. I’m sure you’re very busy, but any chance you’ll be able or want to resume those small insights into your life again?

For whatever reason I have lost interest in “blogging” over the years. I’d rather just let the comics speak for themselves, most of the time. But just for you, here’s a blog about what I’m doing right this second:

Hey Jeph, in the “About” section of the QC site, you say that you have a Mac Pro with a “shit-ton” of RAM. I’m currently in the process of planning a PC build with gaming and art in mind, and I was wondering: just how much is a “shit-ton” in this case? Are we talking 16gb or 32gb (or maybe even 64gb)?

That bit was written literally years ago, I think I had a whopping 3gb of RAM back then. These days I’m rocking 10gb which is plenty for my needs.

Hey Jeph, my friends and I are just starting to stream on Twitch and I was wondering what, if any, video capture card you use for your streaming, since we’re trying to stream without one, resulting in mediocre quality. Also, love the comic!

I don’t use a capture card, actually I don’t even know what that is! My setup is just a combination of CamTwist, Flash Media Encoder, and Soundflower and ReWire for audio.

As a man with a couple of tattoos I would like to ask you for your opinion about meanings behind tattoos. Do tattoos always should have a deep meaning or they can be made just because you wanted or it looked cool?

I think too much emphasis gets put on the idea that tattoos have to have some DEEP PERSONAL SIGNIFICANCE. I mean, yeah, it’s great if they do! But if you just really like how something looks I don’t think it’s automatically a terrible idea to get it tattooed. At the very least, it will be a reminder of where you were at that point in your life.

That being said, I have a “reason” for all of my tattoos. But that’s just me, YMMV!

A lot of webcomic artists, notably Ryan North, KC Green and Joey Comeau have been getting into the business of comic writing recently. Have you gotten any offers to write for a licensed comic, and would you if the opportunity came up?

If somebody made me an offer I would certainly consider it. I’m not sure I’d have the time to give it the proper amount of attention, though. And I have no idea how I would write for an established property, that seems absolutely alien to me.

Yesterday for some reason I started imagining what would happen if Emily read The Game (out of intellectual interest) and then found herself being hit on by a PUA. Probably something like “Oh my gosh! You’re one of those ‘pickup artists’, right? And that was a ‘neg’? I have read about this! You guys, come here! This guy is ‘running game’ on me!” and then giggled to myself for about 10 minutes.

Did you ever worry about having tattoos that were exposed constantly eg: hands, lower arms etc? I’m thinking about my first tattoo but I’m having trouble coming to terms with the ‘society won’t put you in a good job with tattoos’ (thanks mum) and the ‘well it’s my body get over it’… Did you ever have that thought or am I being massively paranoid and overthinking it?

You’re not overthinking it, it’s a real consideration unfortunately! In my case, I am completely unemployable in any conventional sense ANYWAY so I was like “fuck it, I’m getting a shitload of tattoos”

I’ve been thinking about getting a tattoo, but not somewhere that’s easily visible (i.e. something that would still be covered up if I wore a T-shirt). Where would be the best places to put one?

Depends on the shape of the design. Anything above the middle of the bicep or below the collar bone would be covered by a t-shirt. But you’re asking a dude with a hand tattoo, I may not be a good influence.

As a musician (and becoming the primary songwriter for my band), I’ve come to realize over the years that it’s hard to write a solid song that goes in the exact direction I want it to. Are there any tools you use or books that can help me learn to be a better musician? And if you have ever worked with other musicians before, what’s the biggest difference between working by yourself and working in a band?

The biggest improvement in my playing and writing came when I started learning songs from really talented bands (in my case, opeth). The biggest difference between working alone vs. working with others is that when it’s just you, you have to be your own editor. You gain more control but lose the presence of other people to bounce ideas off of. But you also don’t have to compromise.

Hi Mr. Jephsonie, How do you manage to make a guy look like a guy and a girl like a girl (besides body and hair). Is there something special you have to look on while drawing the face?

I’m no master artist, but girls generally have softer lines to their face, bigger eyes, and fuller lips. I also “cheat” and just give all the girls big ol’ eyelashes, that seems to help.

With Claire’s “coming out” to Marten i was suprised with how calmly he reacted and dealt with it. Normally Marten is completely flustered and stumbling over his words, often foot firmly in mouth when dealing with the unexpected and i was wondering whether his nonchalant reaction to Claire revealing herself to him was due to him being inebriated or if it was a purposeful choice to portray him a little bit out of his normal character to make sure he didn’t appear transphobic or freaked out by her?

I think it was in character for him, it’s just not the sort of thing he would get flustered about.

Curious why you’ve never mentioned or attended New York Comic Con? Is there a particular reason? Would you consider coming at some point in the future?

I’m just trying to limit the number of conventions I do in order to preserve my own sanity. Maybe I’ll do that one someday.

You have a degree in music? Oh man, I love Questionable Content even more now. What sort of emphasis did you have? Performance, or musicology, or…?

Mine was focused on theory and composition, but I did a lot of performance and recording as well.

What do you think of the more obscure electronic genres like speedcore, clownstep, neruofunk, psychedelic trance, goa trance, and darkcore compared to the more mainstream genres like trance, house, electro, dubstep, and hard dance?
